What’s all the fuss – is it such a big deal?

YES! Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are a big deal because they are the most common bacterial infections diagnosed among young people. They are both sexually transmitted infections or sometimes called STIs.

STOP! The problem is that most people have no signs or symptoms. So most people do not know they have an infection.

If they are not treated the infections can spread internally causing pain, especially in the abdomen (area below the belly button) and may cause infertility problems i.e. make it difficult to become pregnant.

If you get symptoms you might notice:

Men:
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Pain or tenderness in the testicles
  • Inflammation of the foreskin (less common)
  • An unusual discharge from the tip of the penis – the discharge may be white, yellow or green
Women:
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Lower abdominal pain or tenderness
  • Bleeding after sex or between periods

Get Tested….

We know it can be hard to talk about sex and visit doctors. That’s why there is this new programme where you can get a free Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea test. If you are under 25 years old and have had sex (even months or years ago), you can have a simple, free test to check for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.

What is the Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea test?

The test is simple, and painless and totally voluntary. The great thing about our Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea screening is that all you have to do is pee in a pot if you are a guy and the ladies can just take a swab from their vagina themselves – just like putting in a tampon. This is then sent to a laboratory and 1 week later you will get your results.

What if you have Chlamydia and /or Gonorrhoea?

Don’t Panic!!!

If you have any of the infections we will give you free antibiotic tablets to sort it out. We will also talk to you about the people you have recently had sex with. They might need to be treated and/or tested to stop them having problems in the future or passing the infection on. We will help you sort this part out.

What can you do to stop getting Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea?

  • Using condoms every time you have sex can reduce the risk of getting or passing on Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea and other STIs including HIV.
  • Every time you have sex with a different sexual partner, get a Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea test.
  • Have a Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea test every year until you are 25 – to check.
  • If you do have the infections, take all the tablets you are given.
  • Do not have any sex (oral, vaginal, anal or sex toys) with partner/s until they have been treated too.
