Women's Health : Female Genital Mutilation Reversal
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is also known as ‘cutting’, Gudiniin, Qodiin, Tahoor , Megrez, Bondo / Sonde. If you or anyone you know has been ‘cut’ read on.
WYPS offer a reversal and support service to any woman who has experienced FGM. FGM was made an illegal offence under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 in the UK. However, our service recognises that the practice continues in other parts of the world and that many women in this country underwent FGM before the Act was passed. We are here to support women not to judge them and we provide a sensitive and fully confidential service.
How to get an appointment:
The service offered by WYPS is free, it is open to any woman in the UK and no referral is necessary. To make an appointment call WYPS on 020 7377 7870 or write to us at the following address:
Sue Izzard,
Women and Young People’s Service,
Mile End Hospital,
Bancroft Road,
London.
E1 4DG.
It can take up to 8 weeks to get an appointment. Whenever possible you will have a medical assessment and the procedure in the same appointment.
If you are assessed as suitable for having local anaesthetic you can have the procedure performed on the same day as the assessment. The procedure does not take a long time, and you will be able to go home on the same day. We encourage you to attend with someone who can accompany you home after the procedure.
If you are assessed as requiring general anaesthetic you will be given a second appointment and asked to return. For this procedure you must have someone with you who can take you home afterwards. You will be able to go home on the same day.
We advise clients to eat and take a paracetamol before attending their first appointment.
Pregnancy:
If you are pregnant and have been ‘cut’ it is important that the midwife knows before you go into labour so that she can arrange for the right provision at birth and give all the information you need.
