Women's Health : Menopause
Our menopause clinics are designed for women who are experiencing menopausal symptoms and would like information and advice on the treatment options available.
You can also access the service if you are currently using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and have any questions or concerns regarding its long-term risks.
To access our menopause clinics, you must be:
- A resident of Tower Hamlets.
- Registered with a GP.
How to access the service
We ask that you see your GP first about your symptoms. He or she may then be able to provide advice, arrange appropriate tests if required, and provide treatment. If your GP is not able to do this, you can ask to be referred to our menopause clinic.
When we receive a referral letter from your GP, we will arrange an appointment for you and inform you of this appointment in writing. The waiting time for first appointments is usually 3 to 6 weeks.
Services provided at the clinic:
- A consultation with a doctor or nurse to assess your symptoms, take a medical history, and conduct an appropriate examination as required. You should bring a list or the actual medications that you are already taking when you attend for your first appointment.
- Tests are arranged if required.
- Full counselling about the different types of HRT; how they work, the side effects, benefits, and long-term risks. For women with PMT symptoms, treatment options are discussed.
- If you decide to commence HRT, the options are discussed with you and a suitable regime is recommended. You will then be given a letter to take to your GP for the prescription.
- Follow-up is arranged appropriately. Once you are happy with your HRT regime, you will be discharged to the care of your GP.
- If you decide to have HRT in the form of an implant, it will be done in the clinic under local anaesthetic. You will be given appointments to have the implant inserted every 6 months.
